Description
A rarely seen Olenellus species from the Lower Cambrian of Nevada. Fragmentary remains of Olenellus howelli are very uncommon, with complete specimens likely numbering a half a dozen or so. This specimen is fantastic, showcasing the species unusual wide cephalon and short spines. It is preserved in stunning purple, with orange and yellow highlights. Heavy iron elements have preserved the glabella and the first few axial segments of the thorax. Small axial spines/nodes can be seen on the first three axial rings, disappearing and then reappearing on the 10th segment and continuing to the terminal thoracic segment before the telson. A small but notable opistothorax (secondary thorax) can be seen pressed into the beginning of the telson or tail spine. The telson emerges as a robust triangular spine, slightly curving down its length. This is an exceptional example of this rarely seen species.
