Description
A spectacular and large example of the highly sought after species, Olenellus fowleri. With its graceful, sweeping spines, likely used for stability in currents, this specimen also has a perfect worm-like secondary thorax, known as the opistothorax, complete with a tiny button-like tip pygidium. The opistothorax on this individual has approximately 25 segments, retains its own axial lobe and has a small triangular terminus that is functionally the pygidium. The secondary thorax is a mysterious bit of anatomy, with no consensus on its purpose.
The specimen is expertly outlined. The matrix has a natural mineralized fused line running through the cephalon of the trilobite.
