–
From the Ediacaran aged Wood Canyon formation of western Nevada comes these rare fossils from the Ediacaran Period, pre-dating the Cambrian at approximately 600 million years old. Aspidella are disc-shaped fossils with a central “pimple”. Examples from Nevada are exceedingly rare, and only recently published in 2022. They are also exceptionally preserved when compared to those from other Ediacaran sites around the globe, such as Norway. What was Aspidella? It was originally considered a scyphozoan jellyfish but may also be the holdfast of some organism, the main body of which extended into the open water but broke off before fossilization. Like most Ediacaran fauna, they are unlikely to be classified and rather remain murky mysteries of Earth’s distant past.
